Introduction

With improvement of health and discovery of new treatments, the health level of societies and the average life expectancy in the world has increased substantially. However, treatment of chronic diseases such as hereditary diseases and cancers are still considered unresolved medical challenges today. In recent years, with advancement of modern sciences in the field of medicine, scientists have been able to provide world with new therapies.

A new field known as regenerative medicine, consisting gene therapy, cell therapy, and tissue engineering, has been emerged in recent years with collaboration of basic and clinical sciences specialists, which provided new treatments for previously fatal and incurable diseases. On the horizon of the development of this science, the possibility of producing and repairing tissue and regenerating organs, as well as the treatment of hereditary and cancerous diseases, has been fully revealed.

The intense tendency of world’s researchers and scientists to this branch of science and massive investments of developed countries, clearly showcases the important and significant role of this modern technology for treatment of diseases. It is expected that countries obtaining this technology will be considered as the countries that have strong authority at the national and international levels.

Advancements in the field of cell and gene therapy in Iran, despite relatively low investments, indicates the country’s high growth potential in this area, so that Iran is currently ranked 14th in the world in terms of science production. (Source: Scopus Website)

The current high capacity of Iranian researchers in this field indicates that we have specialized manpower for production of knowledge-based cutting-edge products in the field of regenerative medicine, and by increasing material and spiritual investments, we will witness further progression of new treatments.
